Our Ocean-Themed (Reading) Adventure

Sketch of boy drawing on beach by Wendy Kwasny, Copyright 2012The other day it was cold, windy and sprinkling: the perfect day for a flu shot followed by a beach visit. We drew in the sand and collected rocks and shells. Only the diehard beach runners were out, so we mostly had the place to ourselves.

Miles practiced writing his name in the sand with a found feather so, “All my friends will know I was here.” I wonder if the letter tracing and spelling iPad apps are helping.  Rocket Speller and ABC Tracer – Letters, Numbers, Words, Phonics – for iPad are his favorites. I love overhearing him spell, sounding out each letter and then pushing it to hear the recorded child’s voice confirm he was right. Bringing that knowledge to the beach? Even better.

We built a sand castle, spotted dolphins right beyond the break and had a picnic in the trunk of our SUV before heading back inland.  The perfect kind of rainy day.

When we got home, we continued our ocean-themed adventure by reading The Magic School Bus: Oceans. Miles never tires of the story, interwoven games, and videos. He loves to tap the people and make them repeat themselves over and over and learning about different ocean creatures.

When book apps and real life come together so neatly, it really makes my day.
